George and Phillis

George Whitefield (1714-1770)

George and Phillis

"Hail, happy saint, on thine immortal throne…We hear no more the music of thy tongue."

Yes, it is I who writes this prose.

Your message rang true to this lowly slave.

I picked your cotton and cleaned your house.

Held your babies and called you master.

I sang the Blues, longed for freedom and died young.

“Many have Christ in their heads, but no Christ in their hearts.”

The echo of your golden tongue rings in my ear.

God knows why you brought slavery to Georgia one million strong…

so we could bring God back to you.
